I recently finished reading the first book in the Where Dragons Rule series by Evan Drake,
Dissent. It's a book about an adopted dragon, Aeris, who steps out of her sheltered life under her noble human owner, learns the outside world is full of strife and darkness, and comes to grips with the reality of her own life. One day I'll gather my thoughts into a more detailed review, but I'll give my first impressions here. It's engrossing and kept me reading, and I want to learn more about the world and how it came to be. However, the growth I was hoping for in the lead character didn't happen until much later in the book; anyone hoping for a more proactive, capable lead may be frustrated. The book gets
fucking dark early on (
like Content Warning dark, hover here for a brief description), and I'm not convinced it was necessary. I do want to read the second book when it comes out because, like I said, the world is interesting enough for me to be curious about it and what else will happen in it, and I think the issues I have with this first book will be resolved in the next.
Meanwhile, in the time it took me to read it, I acquired three more furry books because I guess I'm collecting them now. No, they're not the only ones on my reading list, and I'm not the type to eat dessert first. I'll get to them one day, really.
